Probabilistic Failure Isolation for Cognitive Robots
نویسندگان
چکیده
Robots may encounter undesirable outcomes due to failures during the execution of their plans in the physical world. Failures should be detected, and the underlying reasons should be found by the robot in order to handle these failure situations efficiently. Sometimes, there may be more than one cause of a failure, and they are not necessarily related to the action in execution. In this paper, we propose a temporal and Hierarchical Hidden Markov Model (HHMM) based failure isolation method. These HHMMs run in parallel to determine causes of unexpected deviations. Experiments on our Pioneer 3-AT robot show that our method successfully isolates failures suggesting possible causes.

Hierarchical HMM-based Failure Isolation for Cognitive Robots
Robots execute their planned actions in the physical world to accomplish their goals. However, since the real world is partially observable and dynamic, failures may occur during the execution of their actions. These failures should be detected immediately, and the underlying reasons of these failures should be isolated to ensure robustness. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic and tempora...
متن کاملProbabilistic BDI in a Cognitive Robot Architecture
The probabilistic approach to cognition has become an established approach in recent decades. Cognition is better viewed as solving probabilistic, rather than logical, inference problems; i.e. cognition is better understood in terms of probability theory, rather than in terms of logic. This article presents a cognitive architecture used to govern a robot probabilistically. The design and implem...
متن کاملCognitive Robots Learning Failure Contexts Through Experimentation
We propose a lifelong experimental learning method for cognitive robots to build and transfer knowledge among appropriate contexts. Experience gained through learning is used as a guide to future decisions of robots for both efficiency and robustness.
متن کاملSocial Robots for Long-Term Space Missions
Socially assistive robots (SARs) contribute to task success by supporting humans through verbal information and guidance, while reducing task load through social mechanisms, e.g., human-intuitive mimics and gestures. In this paper, we present two novel interaction scenarios using such robots that could lead to assistance on long-term missions in space. The first addresses physical exercise, whi...
متن کاملCognitive Reasoning and Trust in Human-Robot Interactions
We are witnessing accelerating technological advances in autonomous systems, of which driverless cars and home-assistive robots are prominent examples. As mobile autonomy becomes embedded in our society, we increasingly often depend on decisions made by mobile autonomous robots and interact with them socially. Key questions that need to be asked are how to ensure safety and trust in such intera...
